Metal Sculpture Linea Nigra
Linea Nigra : A Latin term meaning “black line”, used to describe the vertical line that appears on the abdomen of pregnant women.
These bronze sculpture works are a celebration of the beauty and the strength of the pregnant woman. Linea Nigra idolizes the mother as the vessel, making her larger than life, while simultaneously questioning the father’s role. Through this series, Teguh explores man’s primal nature, his own ego and attempts to understand his relationship with the pregnancy, the mother and the child.
In creating the large, bronze sculptures ,Teguh pays homage to the woman, immortalizing her as a vessel of incredible strength. There is a complexity with the use of such an abstract and contradictory material to describe the softness of the pregnant woman. However, the weight of the steel mimics that of the pregnant body. Their earthy, rusty tones and voluptuous forms give them a goddes-like feeling. (Chis Kerrigan in Linea Nigra exhibition catalogue)
